We use the term conductors to refer to highly electrically conductive materials. Conductive materials are suitable for processing using EDM. As part of this process the melting point of the material is the most important parameter, which determines the machining speed.
Materials suitable for EDM
In order to use EDM, the electrical resistance of the material must not be greater than 100 ?-cm. Materials that satisfy these requirements are, for example, ferroalloys (such as steel), copper, aluminium and carbide. Due to their high insulation value, EDM cannot be used on ceramic materials. Adding electrically conductive phases creates ceramic composites on which EDM can be used. A disadvantage, however, is that the mechanical properties such as the hardness, diminish.
